Martina Advances to Semifinal in London

Former Miner Churandy Martina earned a spot in the men’s 200m semifinals on Tuesday at the 2012 London Olympics.
Martina was the first Olympian to cross the finish line with a time of 20.58 in the seventh heat of the day. The Netherlands native will be running tomorrow in the third heat of the men’s 200m semifinals starting at 1:10 p.m. (MT).
Mickaeal Hanany competed in the men’s high jump final and posted a mark of 2.20m. The former Miner represented France in the Olympics and finished 14th overall. Ivan Ukhov (Russia) took gold with a jump of 2.38m, followed by Erik Kynard (USA), who claimed silver with a mark of 2.33m. Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar), Derek Drouin (Canada) and Robert Grabarz (Great Britain) took bronze with a leap of 2.29m.
Former Miner Blessing Okagbare took the field today in the woman’s long jump qualification round. Okagbare represented Nigeria in the first group of the day. The Olympian posted a mark of 6.34m, but failed to qualify for the long jump final.
