EL PASO - The community responds to the death of an El paso Police Officer... killed early last Wednesday morning in a car crash involving a suspected drunk driver.

Officer Karl McDonough leaves behind a wife, three children and the department he proudly served for nearly three years before losing his life.

"Within a second his life ended, but now his family has to go on for the next 40 years dealing with the loss of a father and the loss of a husband."

Officer Karl McDonough was riding shotgun as he and his partner responded to a call on the city's east side when investigators say 19-year-old Alejandro Fierro... who was reportedly drinking and driving... ran a red light and t-boned their police car at the intersection of Zaragosa and Saul Kleinfeld.

"It hurts. It's a blow to the family. It's like a brother, or somebody in your family being killed. It affects us. I guess kind of what we do is we step in times like these and help out his family because they're struggling."

Sgt. Ron Martin... President of the El Paso Municipal Police Officers' Association... accepted a certificate of gratitude and a monetary donation on behalf of McDonough's family Sunday morning at Destiny Family Christian Center... which partnered with Operation Hope to present the gift.

"We want the family to know that our prayers are with them and we want to follow it up with action and not just intention."

Martin wants El Pasoans to learn a lesson from this tragedy... and remember for every action there's a reaction.

"You have a 19-year-old kid who had something to drink and now his life is affected. It'll never be the same. The officer's family, they have kids, they'll never be the same. The officers on the department who knew him will never be the same. One small action affects everybody."
