EL PASO - More El Pasoans showed up on the first day of early voting than in the past gubernatorial race, according to the latest numbers from the Elections Department.

Monday, 3,496 voters turned out for the first day of early voting, including mail-in ballots. This is just a little more than 1 percent of total registered voters eligible to vote in these races in El Paso county.

We compared that number to the first-day turnout four years ago, when a gubernatorial race also headlined the ballot.

In 2006, 3,286 people voted in the first day. That made up less than 1 percent of total registered voters.

Another note: there are fewer voters registered now than four years ago.

As of now, there are 346,431 registered voters eligible to vote in the County. In 2006, there were 373,110 eligible voters.
