A powerful drug kingpin authorities say helped smuggle millions of dollars worth of cocaine into the United States is dead.

Heriberto Lazcano, boss of the Zetas Cartel, was killed during a shootout Sunday in a small town 130 miles south of the Texas border. Lazcano was one of the founding members of the Zetas, a cartel accused of smuggling cocaine and other drugs into the U.S. every year. There's been a twist though, as officials reported his corpse was stolen.

"Between one and 1:30 in the morning a group of heavily armed men wearing masks arrived [at the funeral home] and subdued its personnel," said Coahulia state attorney Homero Ramos. "They took the bodies, put them in a hearse and left the facility, forcing the owner to drive the vehicle."

The Zetas are also blamed for setting fire to a casino in Monterrey that killed 52 people. Both the United States and Mexico combined had more than seven-million-dollars in rewards for information leading to Lazcano's capture.
