EL PASO — The Ysleta Independent School District is facing several serious challenges. That was the message today from Superintendent Michael Zolkoski in his state of the district address to educators and parents. Zolkoski says Texas schools are facing a funding crisis. Lawmakers cut $5.4 billion from schools two years ago, and that's had a direct effect on the quality of education that students receive.
"What we want is equity, which is what we wanted in the late 70's. We're back where we used to be and we've got to have some things funded and so we need some help from Austin and legislators and so we're looking for them to reinstate that $5.4 billion," said Zolkoski.
Zolkoski says schools along the border have been especially hit hard by budget cuts. More than 400 schools sued the state over that lack of funding. The case is now headed to the Texas Supreme Court.
