YISD names new Eastwood HS, Parkland HS principals

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Ysleta Independent School District announced the appointment of both Eastwood and Parkland High School Principals during their School Board Meeting Wednesday night.

David Boatwright, current principal at Eastwood Middle School, was named the new Principal at Eastwood High School - taking over the position from Armenia Smith who announced her retirement in June. Boatright was one of 21 applicants for the position and was eventually selected as the finalist who will help lead the school through the rebuilding process.

Boatright began teaching in 1991 as a physical education teacher at Irvin High School and served in multiple positions before arriving at Eastwood High School in the late 90's. He's held several positions including world history teacher, world geography teacher, wrestling coach, Eastwood High School Assistant Principal before he was promoted to principal at Eastwood Middle School in 2015.

YISD says that Boatright has earned respect and success in the Eastwood community and understands the importance of Trooper traditions and knowledge of secondary curriculum.

During the next several years, Boatright will oversee the rebuilding of the campus as part of the YISD bond. Through the next school years, underclassmen will remain at Eastwood Middle School while upperclassmen will be housed in portables on campus during the construction process.

Penelope Bankston, current principal at Valley View Middle School was named the new Principal at Parkland High School after a comprehensive search that included 15 applicants. Bankston replaces Dr. Darrel Henson who resigned to move out of El Paso earlier this summer.

Bankston began her teaching career in 1994 in Alpine, Texas as a bilingual teacher. Since then she's served as a middle school reading teacher, high school dyslexia teacher, high school instructional specialist, high school assistant principal and most recently, principal at Valley View Middle School.

YISD officials cite Bankston's knowledge of secondary curriculum and longtime experience working in Northeast El Paso as playing a pivotal role in her leading Parkland toward continued success.

Boatright and Bankston begin their tenure in their new positions effective Monday, July 24.
