The Wrigley Company is temporarily stopping production and sales of its controversial new caffeinated gum.

The move is in response to concerns from the FDA about the impact of caffeine on children and teens.

Wrigley says it is removing its alert energy caffeine gum from store shelves to allow the government agency to develop regulations on caffeine added to food and drinks.

Each piece of the new gum contains 40 milligrams of caffeine which is equivalent to a half a cup of coffee.

Last week, wrigley stated the gum was an energy product marketed for adults 25 and older.
