Worst West Nile Virus Outbreak
DALLAS - Dallas County is experiencing the worst outbreak of West Nile virus in the county's history.
West Nile Virus is spreading faster than it has in previous summers. The number of cases now nears 700 with nearly 30 deaths reported.
State officials say Texas is on track to have the worst year ever for West Nile caused, they say, by an unusually warm winter followed by a rainy spring, perfect breeding conditions for mosquitos.
Neighboring states are reporting higher rates of infection this year too and cases have been reported in almost every state in the nation.
Experts recommend using insect repellent outdoors, draining areas of standing water and wearing long sleeves and pants when outside at dawn and dusk.
Most west nile victims have no symptoms and recover quickly.
