EL PASO – A piece of history passed through El Paso, today. Just as we approach the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a steel beam from the World Trade Center, is featured in a ceremony at one of our fire houses.

The piece of metal was once a part of the south tower. Now, it's considered a symbol, honoring all who passed away on September 11th.

"The purpose of this is to enforce that we will never forget and will remember what happened on 9-11," said Michael O'Connor, with the Terry Farrell Firefighters' Fund.

The Terry Farrell Firefighters' Fund is taking the beam cross-country, to share a piece of history with America.

“The trip started on July 22nd in Baltimore, and went on to Raleigh, North Carolina; to Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” said O'Connor.

Their latest stop was at an El Paso firehouse, where the beam was featured in the ceremony, that included some of our own firefighters.

Sergio Renteria is a firefighter for the El Paso Fire Dept.; he said this holds special meaning for him.

"I'm deeply honored to be a part of this ceremony, and actually hold a piece of the twin towers in my hand. I can't really tell you how I feel. It's a great honor, knowing that every fireman has a certain brotherhood,” stated Renteria.

Daniel Roy is also an EPFD firefighter; he said the timing of the event is also significant.

"The 10-year anniversary is that much more special for us, because we did this with intent, knowing what had happened - we watched it happen, 10- years ago,” said Roy.

Next up, the beam will go back on a fire truck and keep making the rounds, until it ends up at the San Diego Firehouse Museum.
