When companies start coming to El Paso, they'll need people with science and math skills to fill their jobs. That's why Workforce Solution Upper Rio Grande is hosting a science and math competition, the S.T.E.M. Challenge, which stands for science, technology, engeneering and math..
A group of seniors at Montwood High School won the district level in a future leaders competition called Skills USA. They found out that the Workforce Solution mission is hosting a math and science competition called the S.T.E.M. Challenge. The S.T.E.M. Challenge has much of the same criteria as Skills U.S.A. So the students entered The S.T.E.M. Challenge, using a business plan that they'd made for Skills U.S.A.
Twenty-four other El Paso teams are entering the Skills U.S.A. Competition. Workforce Solution is holding it because they want to encourage students to focus on science, technology, engineering, and math. These are areas in which jobs will be open in the future. As it stands, El Paso does not have enough qualified people to filled those jobs when they become available.
