Jesus Maunel Rojas shot his girlfriend Bridgette Dominguez twice before turning the gun on himself Monday afternoon, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.

This occurred at the Sexton Apartments in the 1800 block of Sexton St. in Las Cruces.

Amanda Valenzuela, a neighbor, rushed into the apartment with her nephew after hearing gunshots.

Another neighbor had gone inside to remove one of the couple’s children from the apartment.

Valenzuela and her nephew found both Rojas and Dominguez on the floor. Her nephew kicked the gun out of Rojas’ hand, and then they both started trying to keep Dominguez alive.

“I just kept telling her, Bridgette, Bridgette, don’t go to sleep,” Valenzuela said.

She rolled Dominguez over and they started applying pressure to her wound and performed CPR.

Dominguez and her unborn child were rushed to hospital but later died.

A longtime friend of the couple says they'd been together since they were teenagers and had recently gotten back together.

“They were great people. They were working through some stuff but nothing that would make anybody assume this would happen,” said Five, a longtime friend of the couple.

But the police department says this isn’t the first time they've responded to a call regarding the couple.

“There was a history between them, “said Dan Trujillo, public information officer for the Las Cruces Police Department.

He said both LCPD and the Dona Ana Sheriff’s Office have responded to domestic violence calls regarding the couple before.

The most recent call was in December, during which Dominguez was arrested.

LCPD also adds Child Protective Services has conducted an investigation at least once.

The couple had three children, all of whom were picked up by family members on Monday.
