Facebook picture could cost two co-workers their jobs

The Massachusetts woman who posted a picture on Facebook of herself flipping the finger next to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier could lose her job. Lindsey Stone's co-worker took the photo of her while they were on a business trip to Washington D.C.

She was next to a sign that reads, "Silence and Respect," while she pretended to shout and put up her middle finger. The photo sparked outrage online.  Both women are now on leave without pay.

Stone's parents addressed the scandal, but did not exactly defend their daughter. Her father, Peter Stone, said, " We've begged her not to put things like that on the site."  He also acknowledged that he understood why people were offended by the picture.  "Oh, definitely," he said.

Lindsey Stone, 30, works for a non-profit business in Hyannis, Mass., called LIFE.  The organization helps adults with disabilities.  She took the picture while on a business trip, then posted it on her Facebook page for her friends.  Then, it went viral.

After complaints poured in from across the country, she was suspended without pay and may be fired.

ACLU staff attorney, Sarah Wunsch, said she believes the situation needs to calm down.   "People talk about political correctness gone amok. This may well be an example of that. I don't think she meant to insult veterans. I think she was being kind of dumb," Wunsch said.

When asked if Lindsey should lose her job over this incident, her own mother said, "I think it should be considered."

Her father added, "I don't want to see her lose her job, but if that's what it is, I can say, 'you caused it.'"
