Woman Arrested for Crashing Vehicle into 2 Family Members
Las Cruces Police arrested a woman suspected of crashing her car into a parked pickup injuring a teenage family member, and then reversing the vehicle and striking another person.
Celia Hernandez, 47, of 2255 W. Picacho Ave., is charged with two counts of intentional child abuse, two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Hernandez was also issued traffic citations for operating a vehicle without insurance, having a fictitious license plate, due-care collision, duty to give identification and failing to give immediate notice of an accident.
At around 10 p.m. Thursday, June 28, Las Cruces Police were called to the Valley Verde Mobile Home Park at 1751 W. Hadley Ave. where a teenage girl and a woman were struck by a vehicle.
Detectives learned that Hernandez was arguing with her estranged husband at a residence where several family members had gathered. Hernandez got behind the wheel of her Pontiac Grand Am and appeared to be leaving the area, but instead drove into the back of a pickup where an adult, a 17-year-old girl and 12-month-old girl were sitting on the tailgate. Hernandez’s car struck a 17-year-old injuring her leg.
Hernandez then put her car in reverse and struck another family member. Hernandez also struck two cars that were parked across the street before driving to her motel room on Picacho Avenue.
The two people injured were taken to local hospitals with relatively minor injuries.
LCPD officers located Hernandez at her motel room. She was taken into custody and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $20,000.
