The winter storm is hitting the Borderland hard and causing very hazardous conditions on the roads.

Here's a look at some of the most recent collisions and road closures today.

A police officer was hit by a car on I-10 East and Brown just after 6pm this evening. He was responding to another accident when he was hit. TX-DOT shut that part of the highway down. The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Also, around 6pm this evening, a rollover on Mesa and Argonaut. Police say the driver lost control of their vehicle and it flipped. There were no injuries and the rollover did not block the street.

Just before 6:30pm, a 70 year-old man walking along Fort and Piedras was hit by a Chevy Blazer. The elderly man was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

In Anthony, Texas, there were up to 5 accidents within a half hour on I-10 East between the Texas and New Mexico state line, which is now closed. Video from the TX-DOT camera shot earlier shows the scene. There were no serious injuries but Anthony police blame black ice for those collisions.

The cold weather is likely to get worse, which means there will be a serious hazard on the streets.

It's called "black ice," a thin layer of ice on the roads that is invisible to drivers and very dangerous.

Here's some tips for dealing with black ice:

As soon as your car begins to slide on black ice, take your foot off the gas pedal immediately.

Don't slam on your brakes.

Look for trouble spots ahead.
