What's Bugging You: No Wheelchair Access

October 2, 2009 - 6:37am

It is Christopher Simental's senior year . Like other students at Eastwood High School, he is getting ready for homecoming, but he has run into a big problem and called on Newschannel 9 for help.

"The main reason I wrote in is because this week is our homecoming week and I bought two tickets to the dance. The dance is at the Bob Lesley gym, which is a gym that is inaccessible," he says.

Dependent on a wheelchair to get around, Chris is upset he cannot get into the gym on his own.

"There is no way possible for me to get down to the bottom floor without getting assistance from others. However, that poses a risk for the people helping me and I would like to do it independently," Chris tells us.

He says back in June,he made district leaders aware that the gym is not accessible to wheelchairs, but they still have not made any improvements. He tells us he does not understand the hold up because there are solutions.

"It can be done as simply as implementing a lift. Yes, it takes time, I understand. Yes, it takes money, but it can be done. The reason I know it can be done is because at another school where I had a similar issue, it was taken care of in about a week and a half," he explains.

District leaders at YISD tell us they are well aware of Chris' request and are currently in the process of having a mobile wheelchair lift taken to Eastwood for him to use. As far as long term plans, we are told the district is in the process of exploring a more permanent fix, so Chris and other students with disabilities can access the gym in the future without a problem.

Whats bugging me is a very rude and unprofessional mobile glass company. Last Tuesday i called Auto Glass Pro for a repair on the REAR window of my vehicle and a gentlemen by the name of Omar answered gave me a reasonable quote and notified me in order to receive that price i had to book for next day service. So i proceeded to talk to my spouse and called "Omar" back for service. Was notified that i was booked for 2pm Wednesday. The appt. time came and left and we proceeded to call Omar to confirm time told us 3:30 or 4pm and finally showed up at 6:15pm. He pulled up and proceeded to pull molding of FRONT windshield, without notifying anyone that he was already there. My husband went out and notified rear window was the one being repaired.. MIND YA THE REAR WINDOW WAS SHATTERED!! So he told us he would return tomorrow at 10am. To make a long story short he never showed, we called and he was very rude, unprofessional and told us he was on Eastside and my husband canceled our order with him and he simply hung up!! We called another company to change window and had it done first thing the next morning. We notified other company that Auto Glass Pro took molding of wrong window if they could replace. Upon arrival of the company we found no molding. So i proceeded to call Omar to ask when he could bring it. He would give me times to simply shut me up, this went on for about three days. Then he would answer and hang up on me, or would let answering machine answer. He never returned calls or messages. Today is already a week and three days and still no molding and no professional conversation with OMAR to fix mistake he did.. I called other companies and they notified me i would have to pay minimum $60. if molding can replace or whole price for windshield which is over $150.. I hope no one else in El Paso is having problems with this company due to recent hail storm. I am very upset and would like NO ONE else to have to go through this..

Whats bugging me is the City Of El Paso Code inforcement dept. They seem to choose who has to comply with city codes in our neighborhood. We were forced by the city to tear down our carport, because it was built without a permit and it was built to close to the property line. Now a neighbor across the street from us built a carport without a permit, built on the property line just like ours, but because he is white and elderly he has been allowed to keep his carport and has not been forced to tear his down like us. Why are the white elderly givin better treatment than others in the neighborhood. My address is 307 Sleepy Hollow, the neighbors address is 5979 Corn Husk ln. If KTSM is fair they will check into this issue of discrimination by our Code enforcement officials in El Paso. My phone number is 9154743553 if you wish to discuss this matter further. Thank YOU
