EL PASO--- An El Paso gym has been ranked as one of the Top 3 gyms in the nation.
The Backstreet Gym, 4789 N. Mesa St., is being called the best gym in the Southwest by Species Nutrition, a well-known supplement maker.
Owner Mary Ellen Jerumbo says she brings her experience as a seven-time world champion power lifter to the facility.
"We have the best equipment the fitness industry offers on the market today," she said.
We got to try some of that equipment out, starting with these treadmills.
We're told they each cost more than a car.
"It actually declines to the front, so any type of tri-athlete, or person that's walking in walking competitions, where they have to train to go downhill and uphill, you can utilize this treadmill," she said.
Runners can also sprint up to 15 miles per hour.
From custom-made dumbbells made for better grip, to boxing, wrestling and crossfit classes, to tough lifting machines made to be easy on the body, Jerumbo says she has it all.
"When you buy equipment that's a little bit higher-end, it adjusts and adapts to the body movement more, so you have less wear and tear on the joints. That's the difference," she said.
Jerumbo says she invested a lot into this gym; more than a $1 million. She's hoping El Pasoans will, in return, invest in themselves.
"My goal is, I want to make El Paso healthy. I want to help give fellow El Pasoans a good quality of life. So hopefully I'll have my shot here," she said.
