El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Texas Senator Wendy Davis’ meteoric rise through the ranks of Texas politics this summer after her abortion bill filibuster has made statewide Democratic leaders the most optimistic in nineteen years that they could elect a fellow Democrat to state office. Thursday, they may get that opportunity.
Davis is expected to announce her candidacy for the Governors’ Office formally on Thursday in her hometown of Haltom City, TX, in the same coliseum where she received her high school diploma.
Davis will be entering the race to some tough competition. Texas Attorney General, Greg Abbott announced his candidacy for the Governor's race in July and has amassed over $20 million in donations statewide.
“El Pasoans deserve a governor who is willing to stand up for each and every Texan not just a select few. Time and time again Senator Davis has proven herself to be a fighter for Texas families and someone who is not scared to stand up against the out of touch politics of the Republican Party” said El Paso Young Democrats President Victor Reyes. “It’s important that El Paso shows its support for Senator Davis from the second that she announces her intentions.”
El Paso Democrats are eagerly anticipating Davis’ announcement and have already been actively pushing voter registration throughout El Paso through Battleground Texas, a statewide organization aimed at registering voters in heavy minority districts.
Texas hasn't elected a Democratic Governor since Ann Richards was elected in 1990. Republicans took over the Governor's Mansion in 1994 when former President George W. Bush was elected and they have maintained a stronghold over the office since.
The El Paso Young Democrats, Battleground Texas and the El Paso County Democratic Party are hosting a watch party for Davis’ announcement at the Double Tree Hotel, 600 N. El Paso St. from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. For more information call Victor Reyes at 915-253-3186
