The Weather Channel announced it will name noteworthy winter storms because their weather folks think the names will make the events easier for people to follow.

Armed with a list of possibilities like “Brutus,” “Khan,” and “Nemo,” Weather Channel specialists say the move will give winter storms “personality” and help raise much-needed awareness.

"There will be a number of criteria we're going to look at, most important of course is going to be snowfall accumulation, ice accumulation, and that combination of wind which can produce significant impacts on the public" said TWC Winter Weather Expert, Tom Niziot.

Although spending time naming snow storms might seem a little excessive, the Weather Channel says they will begin using names more specific than “Snowmageddon” or “Snowtober” for a very serious reason.

The only qualification for the list of 26 winter storm names was that they never appeared on the hurricane lists produced by the National Hurricane Center.
