Wear Diabetes Blue
EL PASO - The El Paso Diabetes Association is encouraging you to wear blue, the official diabetes color, to celebrate and promote November as diabetes month and November 14, World Diabetes Day.
Awareness is the best weapon to fight diabetes. It empowers people to successfully control - even reverse - diabetes and its complications, and reduces or possibly eliminates the need for insulin or other medications.
Of the 85,281 people in El Paso who suffer from diabetes, 25,000 are not even aware they have the disease. And 1 out of 4 El Pasoans remain at a high-risk.
Know the warning signs: Obese people are 2.5 times more likely to have diabetes, and about 61% of diagnosed diabetics in the border area have at least one other diabetic in the family. It is vitally important to consider weight and family history when assessing risk.
Diabetes is a leading cause of death, and is one of the top 3 reasons why our community accesses the emergency room. Half of all patients admitted to local hospitals have diabetes related complications.
