EL PASO - The cold temperatures that are plaguing El Paso Electric Company are now making life miserable for El Paso Water Utilities.

EPWU has been hit by the power company's rolling blackouts.

As a result, several main breaks occurred overnight and several reservoirs are dangerously low.  This can result in loss of water or low water pressure citywide.

EPWU is urging you to conserve water today.

The freezing temperatures have also caused pipes to freeze, leading to water outages and leaks. If you are experiencing a water outage or low water pressure EPWU recommends you boil water before drinking it. A loss of water pressure can allow contaminants from the air and soil to enter into the pipes. This should be done until the electricity situation is resolved or until further notice.

EPWU crews have been working through the night and will continue to work around the clock repairing and monitoring the system.

EPWU is reminding everyone that frozen pipes on private property are not its responsibility.

As the temperature rises this afternoon, the lines should thaw out and service should be restored. But be advised as pipes thaw, they may begin to leak. If you need assistance you should call a licensed plumber. If a major leak is detected inside the home or on the service line from the meter to the home, shut off the water at the meter box.

Here are some tips to thaw out frozen pipes from the American Red Cross website:

• If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Locate the suspected frozen area of the water pipe. Likely places include pipes running against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.

• Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt more ice in the pipe.

• Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water.

• Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you cannot thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.

Maybe this is a good time for our city to consider Energy Deregulation! If we had options, would this have still happened???

Hey didn't I see you at House of Rock? I sure didn't see you drinking water,I take it that was your way of helping with water conservation:)

I sure HOPE the News Channels take a "HARD Look" into EPEC and get to the reason a company can be so incapable of doing their job! Is it to much to ask for a company to prepare for the worst BEFORE it strikes? I say FIRE ANYONE that had a roll in not preparing EPEC for ALL situations!

For all of you who are unable to search a website: Here it is!!!
ATTENTION EL PASO, TX RESIDENTS: THERE ARE RUMORS CIRCULATING THRU TEXT MESSAGES THAT THERE ARE UPCOMING CITY WIDE BLACKOUTS. THESE ARE ALL FALSE RUMORS. ROLLING BLACK OUTS HAVE COMMENCED & WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THERE WILL NOT BE ENTIRE CITY BLACKOUTS. PLEASE HELP STOP THE RUMORS THAT ARE CIRCULATING THROUGHOUT THE BORDERL...AND.

what are all these outages...where is all the money they collect from the citizens of El Paso and beyond. Are the executives pocketing the money and not investing in the company.

I got the same text msg yesterday, advising people about a city-wide blackout scheduled to happen last night at midnight...

TONIGHT - CITY BLACK OUT!!!!
I am now hearing that the EPEC will shut off power to the entire city of El Paso tonight at midnight. I have not seen it posted on thier web site. Does anyone out there have any more info on this. I would appreciateany info you could provide.

It is just rumors going around. And that is all Just a Rumor. No they will continue to rotating the electricity services through out the City of El Paso...

Brenda, we have something posted on ktsm.com with this information. Disregard that text message. It's simply a rumor.

OPEN A FAUCET AT NITE TO ALLOW A SMALL TRICKLE TO KEEP THE WATER FLOW MOVING. NEVER USE A BLOW TOURCH ON A FROZEN PIPE OR FITTING.

I need to know if this is true: received a text message saying that ElPaso Electric will impose a city-wide blackout tonight at midnight. Is this true? People need to be alerted so they can plan ahead.

How bad is the water shortage?
