WASHINGTON, D.C.— Millions of people are expected to travel to the Capital during the weekend as the cherry blossom trees begin to bloom in time for the annual festival.

More than 3,000 cherry trees began to blossom on Thursday morning, just in time for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival is considered to be the nation's greatest springtime celebration.

Despite spring settling in, D.C. is experiencing winter temperatures in the mid-40s. Forecasters said up to half an inch of snow could fall on Sunday morning. A park service spokesman said the cold weather could help preserve the flowers, unless the storm brings in gusts of wind that blows the petals away.

The cherry trees are expected to be in peak bloom between Tuesday through Friday.
