CANUTILLO - The fugitive who assaulted a detective and caused a frenzy in Canutillo and Vinton today, has been caught.

He's Fernando Lavenant, 19. He was wanted on several felony charges like kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. When a sheriff's detective went to arrest him this morning, Lavenant attacked him, then fled in the detective's unmarked car. His escape lasted eight hours.

A massive search was launched today for Lavenant. The chaos came to a screeching halt this evening when cops got a tip that the fugitive was in a residential neighborhood in Canutillo.

“SWAT members were summoned to the scene as soon as it was confirmed that he was at that residence. The subject...tried to elude law enforcement when he was confronted by SWAT members,” said Angelica Becerra with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

That's when we're told Lavenant was shot by police. Jamie Duby lives across the street from where it happened.

"We hear like three or four gunshots, and one of my neighbors saw him run this way and that's when they were like, 'We got him, we got him. Call an ambulance, call an ambulance,'” said Duby.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office didn't tell us who shot Lavenant, but they are confirming that he was caught.

"The subject has been shot. He has been transported to a local area hospital with critical injuries,” said Becerra.

Becerra said other than Lavenant, no one else was hurt in the shooting.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office didn't specify the exact nature of Lavenant's injuries.
