San Elizario, TX (KTSM) — San Elizario residents took another big step toward becoming a self-governing city, as the county certified their incorporation petition Monday afternoon.
With a deadline of 5 p.m, the county certified the 87 petition signatures and the land jurisdiction boundaries late Monday afternoon, with just one minute left before the deadline.
"I feel wonderful, I think we are progressing it’s a very positive move and I think we got a positive response from Judge Escobar," San Eli resident Leticia said.
Group leader Maya Sanchez says they're ready to begin their campaign to convince undecided voters.
"We're going be doing everything that everyone does in a campaign...send mailers, (block) walking, making phone calls, anywhere we can be visible...every fiesta...everywhere we can have a presence, we will be there educating voters" Sanchez said.
However incorporating won't be simple, as the group will face opposition and have to raise funds. Sanchez says they have to raise $20,000 for legal fees and the campaign.
One San Elizario resident says it's just the wrong time to incorporate. "We're going to end up paying more, so I don’t think it's ready, because they have to hire a mayor, city council judge, everything that is required to incorporate and I don’t think we are ready for that." Maria Covernali said.
County Judge Veronica Escobar says the county completed its role in the incorporation efforts and it is now in the hands of San Eli residents.
"They have to create a charter, elect people but all of that is contingent on today" Escobar added.
