It's been almost three weeks since residents of a Vado community were flooded and had their homes buried in sand.

Community volunteers and Tierra Del Sol in Las Cruces is helping residents dig themselves out so they can move from the flood prone area.

"It's better to get out," said resident Yadira Hernandez.

Hernandez and her family have been evacuated twice in about months time during monsoon season.

On August 14th a heavy storm turned the neighborhood into a gushing river with water described as waist high.

With the heavy flood waters the storm also washed down sand and gravel from the mountain, even burying a car.

"The level of the sand would cover almost the whole mobile home," Hernandez said.

With the help from Tierra Del Sol in Las Cruces and members from the local community, the families have been moving countless tons of sand that have washed down.

Young children shoveled as much as they possibly could with heavy machinery clearing the sand and gravel from the sides of homes.

"We really thank them cause we don't know what we would have done with out them," Hernandez said.
