UTEP Students Win Statewide, National Awards

Staff members of The Prospector student newspaper and Minero Magazine recently earned national recognition for their work.

At the College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers’ convention on April 2, Prospector design students won four awards:

            Best of Category for Display Ad – Earth Week Ad– Yasmin Marquez
            Best Black-and-White ad— third place – Mail Services – Yasmin Marquez
            Best Display Ad Campaign – third place –Miner Village– Esteban Marquez, Yasmin
            Marquez, Javier Villanueva
            Best Online Newspaper Promotion Ad — third place – QR code heads– Esteban Marquez

During the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association conference, held in early April, students from The Prospector and Minero Magazine won 21 awards for their work in 2011:

In March, the College Media Association awarded Minero Magazine a second-place Apple Award for Best Magazine Cover for the spring 2011 issue, designed by Victor Portillo.

Last fall, the Associated Collegiate Press awarded a fifth-place award to Yasmin Marquez in their 2011 Design of Year competition in the magazine feature spread category.

The College Media Association also recognized three Minero students during the 2011 Best of Collegiate Design competition. Victor Portillo won a third-place prize for feature spread design; Josias Castorena won a fourth-place prize for editorial illustration; and Yasmin Marquez won an honorable mention for feature spread design.
