A study group of UTEP nursing students are banding together to help a classmate in need.

Rosalinda Prieto, a nursing student at UTEP is once again battling AML, a form of leukemia after relapsing from a year-long remission a few days ago.

Her college classmates, Gil Lara, Roseanne Aguilar, Paulina Aguilar and Loam Pham said they are doing everything they can to make sure she gets the treatment she needs. They said her family is financially compromised in sending her to Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Center for bone marrow transplants.

One of Rosie’s professors weighed in on their efforts, who said she has witnessed Rosie’s dedication to school despite her illness.

“It does not surprise me that our students are going above and beyond to help her. Helping Rosie is definitely going to prepare these students for their nursing careers," said Audrey Tolouian, of UTEP's School of Nursing. "They’ve learned that patients not only have physical needs but they also have financial and emotional needs"

Her classmate, Gil Lara, said they've built their study team like a family, and their only choice is to take care of family.

“When she [Rosie] becomes a nurse, she’s going beyond paying it forward, because she’ll be taking care of many cancer patients with the same conditions,” Lara said.

The group is asking for donations in helping Rosie’s family raise the funds necessary to cover her treatment. You can call GECU to donate to the “Rosalinda Prieto” account number 588391. The phone number is 915-778-0009. For questions, contact Roseanne Aguilar at rdaguilar14@gmail.com.
