EL PASO - Two local universities are teaming up for a good cause today.

The University of Texas at El Paso and New Mexico State University are both collecting blood donations for the United Blood Services.Students, staff and community members are all encouraged to participate in the I-10 Coalition Blood Drive.

The event kicks off today at 11:30 a.m. On the UTEP campus at the Union Breezeway. Blood donation sites will be set up on the UTEP campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12-16.

"I think this blood drive means a lot to our communities because we are actually in tremendous need for blood supply in this area and the universities coming together to support this tremendous cause is so important for us and we get our students faculty, staff and alumni involved and that's the beauty of it and it’s a friendly competition and at the end of the day, the region wins," says Richard Daniel, UTEP Alumni Relations.

UBS will be at both campuses next week collecting blood.

The United Blood Services is scheduled to announce the amount of blood collected at the UTEP vs. NMSU football came on September 17th.
