The University of Texas El Paso Geological Sciences Department received a $1 million pledge Saturday.

Alumnus James Cearley and his wife, Susan, pledged the money to the Center for Entrepreneurial Geosciences.  The center will train geologists to become effective and successful entrepreneurs in their fields.

As a student at UTEP, Cearley said he received scholarships that changed his life.

"I feel very strongly that the quality education I got here really set me up for success in the oil and gas field, so it was very important for me to give back," said Cearley.

Cearley graduated from UTEP in 1978, and recently retired from Chevron after 34 years of service.

The center is still in the initial planning stages.  It is the brainchild of Philip Goodell, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Geological Sciences at UTEP.  Goodell and his late wife also pledged $1 million in October, 2012 hoping it would inspire others to contribute and make their own generous gift.
