EL PASO, TX — The matchup between Julio Cesar Chavez Junior and Andy Lee will likely happen at the Sun Bowl.
Today the UT Chancellor released a video on YouTube explaining his main concern in canceling the fight was the safety of the students, staff and faculty of UTEP.Julio Cesar Chavez Junior's girlfriend allegedly has ties to the Sinoloa drug cartel and its kingpin 'Chapo' Guzman. Now it seems the fight might stay in El Paso under a few conditions, including no alcohol sales.
" I don't quite understand that because just tomorrow there's a fight at the Frank Irwin facility at the UT facility in Austin and they are allowing beer sales," said City Representative Steve Ortega.
With Tecate as the main sponsor of the main event, it's even a bigger problem.
" This is going to affect UTEP, not the promoter because this is part of our business transaction with them and we regret that there will not be the sale of alcohol," said UTEP President Doctor Diana Natalicio.
The chancellor is concerned that alcohol could make security more complex but Dr. Natalicio disagrees.
"It is better in the long term for us to sell alcoholic beverages, beer in particular at these events than to have people know that they're not going to get to buy beer at the event and to drink as much as they can before they come,” said Natalicio.
Doctor Natalicio says the ultimate decision is up to the promoter and a financial deal with the city.
"So one way of the other we're gonna make sure we do everything possible to ensure that the fight is somewhere in El Paso whether it's the Sun Bowl or Cohen," said Ortega.
