The U.S. Department of Transportation said traffic deaths in the country dropped by 3 percent in 2010; the data shows that translates to 32,788 deaths – which is a record annual low.

Fatalities have dropped by 25 percent over the past five years. Transportation officials say this is partly due to increased seat belt use, better vehicle safety and stronger regulations on teen driving.

Although all signs point to an improvement, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said that still, too many people are killed in preventable crashes, and said he wants to do everything possible to make cars safer, increase seat belt use, and put a stop to drunk and distracted driving.
