A new government report shows that sales at U.S. retailers rose slightly less than expected in March.

The Commerce Department said total retail sales increased 0.4 percent-- the weakest reading since June 2010, when sales fell 0.3 percent.

The government said part of the reason for the sales data is because rising gasoline prices pulled spending away from other segments of the economy.
