The U.S. Marshals Service has confirmed to NewsChannel 9 that the body of a man found dead in a Juarez canal yesterday is that of a deputy U.S. Marshal. According to the Marshals Service, the man has been identified as Vincente Paul Bustamante. We're told Bustamante was an 18-year-veteran with the Marshals Service, but was currently listed as a fugitive after failing to appear in an El Paso court last week on theft charges.

As we first reported yesterday, Bustamantes' body was pulled from a canal near the U.S. Consulate in East Juarez. Mexican police say he had a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Bustamante was put on leave from the Marshals Service for allegedly stealing and pawning several government firearms. U.S. and Mexican authorities are working together to figure out the circumstances surrounding his death.
