U.S. rebukes Iran over secret nuclear plant...
It will shock and anger the world, said one U.S. ally.
Iran has been operating a secret nuclear facility.
That revelation and Iran’s admission of its secret have rocked the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh, where President Obama Friday demanded that Iran end what he says is not a peaceful program.
In an urgently scheduled dramatic public warning at the G-20 in Pittsburgh, Obama spoke for nations outraged that Iran is operating a secret nuclear plant.
"This is not the first time that Iran has concealed information about its nuclear program. Iran has a right to peaceful nuclear power that meets the energy needs of its people. But the size and configuration of this facility is inconsistent with a peaceful program," said the President.
U.S. intelligence reportedly learned of the underground plant a year ago.
By the time of his U.N. Speech Wednesday, Iranian President Ahmadinejad knew his secret was out.
The Iranians informed the U.N. and Friday claimed the plant is not covert because they admit running it
That doesn't blunt the outrage.
"And the scale of what we believe is the breach of international commitments will shock and anger the whole international community and it will harden our resolve," said British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
The U.N. nuclear agency quickly demanded access to the plant.
They better get it, says Barack Obama.
"Iran must comply with U.N. security council resolutions and make clear it is willing to meet its responsibilities as a member of the community of nations," Obama said.
French President Sarkozy predicts tougher sanctions by December if Iran doesn't back down.
The U.S. team, the French and the Brits and others get to make that point in person to the Iranians at a meeting scheduled next week.
Once reluctant to back tougher sanctions, Russian President Medvedev went out of his way Friday to praise the leadership of President Obama.
