Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is giving up part of his salary.

A spokesman said Hagel wants to show support for the thousands of employees impacted by the mandatory budget cuts.

The new Pentagon chief is not subject to the furloughs that are now affecting government workers.

Hagel says he'll write a check to the Treasury Department for up to 14-days of pay.

He's giving up the same amount that a furlough would have cost him.

Hagel makes $199,700.
