EL PASO - A 15-year-old boy is recovering in a hospital after being shot in the arm and leg by a veteran police officer after a beer-run just before noon Tuesday.

Alonzo Torres, a 15-year veteran El Paso Police sergeant spotted the teen who allegedly stole beer from a Paisano Drive Circle K in a residential area south of the convenience store.

The officer attempted to detain the teenager for questioning when he threw a bottle at the sergeant's car.

Investigators said the teen then ran into an alley and the officer chased him on foot. The 15-year-old approached the officer with a a pair of metallic scissors in a threatening manner.

"He refused to follow the officer's commands to drop the object and approached the officer in an aggressive manner with the sharp object," said El Paso Police Spokesman Chris Mears. "The officer fearing for his safety fired his duty weapon striking the subject."

Police said he was transported to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The veteran sergeant was placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.

Its a shame kids now a days don't consider what other people go through to serve them in a daily basis. Whether you're server at a restaurant, a construction worker, or a public servant like a police officer. These people leave their homes and their families to perform a job that serves you. This officer gets to go home to his family, glad the kid didn't die, however he needs to be disciplined. How many times do you hear of officers dying over stupid stuff like this. God Bless this officer.

I stand by the police officer 100%. Thanks for keeping El Paso one of the safest large cities in the USA. Keep up the good work!

wow ur defending this kid who is stealing... which is last time i checked against the law.. y wasnt the kid in school in the first place wat was he doing out doing a beer run... tough call on the police officers part having to shoot the kid but he is doing wat he was trained to do glad he is doing his job

what is up with teens these days?
its very scary to know about this because there are alot of schools, public housing, and daycares around this area. I honestly think it was dumb to chase someone over BEER. Beer runs are done alot of times and not everyone gets chased.
