Investigators believe death is weather-related

UPDATE: New Mexico State Police have identified a man who died after flood waters swept his car away near the Elephant Butte Dam.

Officers found Steven Elsley, 53, dead inside his car at about noon Saturday.

State police released pictures of the Red Toyota submerged in a muddy creek at Ash Canyon.

They said Elsley was from Phoenix and was staying in a local hotel since Monday.
 

ORIGINAL: New Mexico State Police found a man dead inside of a car near the Elephant Butte Dam Saturday.  It is believed to be the first weather-related death.

Officers found a red Toyota sedan partially submerged in a muddy creek at Ash Canyon at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.  Investigators said it appears the car was swept off of State Road 51 during Friday's torrential rains and flooding.

The man has not been identified.
