El Paso - A man, who police say assaulted his wife, found himself in a standoff with the SWAT team this morning in west El Paso.

It happened just after 5:00 a.m. inside an apartment at the Fountain Plaza complex in the 4100 block of West City Court.

Police blocked of nearby streets and the SWAT team evacuated neighboring apartments.

Police say the 43-year-old man assaulted his wife, then wouldn't come out of the apartment when they showed up.

"It was learned that there was a handgun inside the apartment. It had been used in the assault. Officers were unable to make contact at that time with the subject inside," said El Paso Police spokesperson Darrel Petry. Police have not said how the gun was used in the assault but we're told it was not fired.

The man's wife and a child were rescued from inside the apartment.

Crisis negotiators eventually talked the man into coming out. Police arrested him on aggravated assault charges. His name has not been released.
