ANTHONY, NM - Fire investigators have determined the cause of Saturday afternoon's fire that destroyed an Anthony, New Mexico home.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office said the owner of the home admitted to burning trash near his garage. They said he stepped away for only a minute thinking the fire was out. Investigators said winds carried smoldering ashes into the garage and sparked nearby grass.

The fire quickly spread through the home and it took about 50 volunteer firefighters more than an hour to extinguish the fire.

According to fire investigators, the man living at the home smelled smoke and called for help. Nobody was injured in the fire, but the Sheriff's Office said a cat belonging to the homeowners hasn't been found.

The couple living in the home is said to be staying with neighbors.
