EL PASO (KTSM) — United Blood Services in El Paso and Las Cruces is asking for your help. January is their most difficult month because they're in dire need of donations and this year is worse than others.
"It’s very scary," said LuAnn Wieland with UBS. "Right now, our shelves are very, very empty. We need your support. We need your help."
Wieland said they're in desperate need of all types of blood.
Changing weather, busy holiday schedules and increased cold and flu cases cause the shortage in January every year.
"Definitely colds and flus are affecting us this year. There are so many people that are sick and of course you cannot donate if you're sick. You can't donate if you're taking antibiotics," said Wieland.
She said they're organizing upcoming blood drives, but it may be too late if someone needs supplies now.
"When we do get the blood, it has to be processed, it has to be tested and it's a few days until we can actually use it," said Wieland. "We supply 19 area hospitals in El Paso and all of southern New Mexico. They depend on us totally."
UBS needs about 200 pints a day to supply those hospitals.
You can donate at any of their three locations at 424 S. Mesa Hills Drive in West El Paso, 1138 N. Zaragoza Drive in East El Paso or 1200 Commerce Drive in Las Cruces.
