9-year-old "Chillie" Vasquez shares the story of how a drunk driving crash changed her life
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — The Texas Department of Transportation is launching a new "Faces of Drunk Driving" campaign in El Paso Tuesday.
In 2012, 1,170 people died in alcohol-related crashes, and another 9,458 were seriously injured.
The Faces of Drunk Driving website (www.facesofdrunkdriving.com) features the stories of more than a dozen victims of drunk driving car crashes.
Xitclalli "Chilli" Vasquez, 9, is part of the campaign. She will be in El Paso Tuesday to share her story at Upper Tom Lea Park at 10:30 a.m.
On the afternoon of July 9, 2011 a drunk driver in Fort Worth slammed head on into the car Chilli was riding in with her aunt, sister and cousins. Chilli suffered serious injuries and is now paralyzed from the chest down.
The crash happened three days before her 8th birthday. Before the crash, Chilli said she used to like to play tag and hide and seek.
In the campaign commercial, Chilli's mother talks about the day she had to share the devastating news with her daughter.
"She overheard me and another nurse talking and she said, 'I'm not going to walk again."
Chillie will tell her story among a display of 1,100 flags, which will represent each of the Texas killed in an alcohol-related crash last year.
Watch NewsChannel 9 at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. for coverage of Chillie's visit.
