EL PASO — With Labor Day around the corner, TXDOT was already warning those planning to party.
Drink. Drive. Go to jail.
The department headed to UTEP Monday morning. Students put on orange jumpsuits and went behind bars.
"Someone asked me last week, are you all putting those numbers up, just as a scare tactic? Just to scare people that are driving by? And the answer is definitely not," sad Monica O'Kane, XDOT Traffic Safety Specialist. "Those numbers are real. Those numbers were someone's family member. Those numbers, when they change next month, it could be you or I."
So far this year, more than 1,700 people have died on Texas roads.
It's driving the message that drinking and driving will land you in jail. Last week, TXDOT started putting traffic death statistics on electronic billboards, and they're not apologizing for it.
