A woman who lives in East El Paso and another who lives in the central portion of the city are the latest residents confirmed to have contracted the West Nile virus this year.

The City of El Paso Department of Public Health says the year's second case is in a 52-year-old woman who lives within the 79936 zip code.

The third is a 62-year-old woman who lives in the 79925 zip code.

The first confirmed case was a 16-year-old boy who resides within the 79928 zip code.

All three are now recovering from the disease.

With recent rainfall throughout the region, local health officials are reminding residents to prevent mosquito breeding by emptying standing water both inside and outside the home.

Prevention-The best way to avoid exposure to West Nile Virus is to practice the four Ds:

• use Insect repellents that contain DEET

• Drain any standing water

• Dress in long, loose and light-colored clothing and

• take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing from Dusk to Dawn.

A total of 32 confirmed cases were reported in El Paso last year, and six of those patients died as a result of either the disease itself or due to underlying conditions.

To report large areas of standing water or areas suspected of mosquito breeding, call Environmental Services at (915) 3-1-1.
