LAS CRUCES - A 7-month-old baby was flown to an El Paso hospital with life-threatening head injuries, and the boy’s mother and her boyfriend have been arrested on child abuse charges.

Danielle Workman, 22, and Jaime Cardenas, 25, both of the 300 block of east Foster Road, are charged with one count each of negligent child abuse resulting in great bodily harm.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, Las Cruces Police rushed to Memorial Medical Center where Workman had taken her 7-month-old boy. Detectives learned that Workman’s baby was suffering from intracranial bleeding and had several visible bruises to his forehead, left eyebrow and cheek.

The boy was subsequently airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso due to the severity of his injuries.

Detectives were told by medical professionals that the boy’s injuries could possibly be life-threatening.

Las Cruces Police detectives learned that as many as three days ago Cardenas dropped a bottle of milk on, or threw the bottle at, the child causing one of his injuries. Workman also told detectives that she noticed suspicious bruises on her baby over the past two weeks but failed to contact authorities or seek assistance because she didn’t want to get Cardenas in trouble with the law.

Neither Workman nor Cardenas sought medical attention for the child until late Tuesday evening.

Workman is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond. Cardenas, because he was found to be in violation of probation, is being held without bond.

Ok...what kind of SORRY stupid ...idiot ..DA you have going on over there?? this guy shouldve been back in PRISON underneath it actually before this happened for probabtion violations...i BLAME everyone involved for being too lazy and stupid and blind!!

Colossians 3:21 tells us not to “embitter” our children so they will not become discouraged. Ephesians 4:15-19 says we are to speak the truth in love and use our words to build others up, not allow rotten or destructive words to pour from our lips, especially toward the tender hearts and minds of children.

Psychological and emotional abuse is also forbidden in Scripture. Ephesians 6:4 warns fathers not to “exasperate” or provoke their children, but to bring them up in the “training and instruction of the Lord.” Harsh, unloving discipline alienates children’s minds from their parents and renders their instructions and corrections useless.

children have a special place in God’s heart and anyone who harms a child is inviting God’s wrath upon Him. When Jesus’ disciples tried to keep children from coming to Him, He rebuked them and welcomed little children to His side, saying, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14). Then He took the children in His arms and blessed them (v. 16).

I pray the baby recovers without serious brain damage and is adopted by loving people. I can't imagine what his short life has been like.

As to abortion . . . please. Abortion has existed forever! It's not something new about this society. Wake up and realize there are plenty of horrors in this world. It's not all related to abortion and this is not an abortion loving society. If you think so, you're incredibly ignorant about world history.

Focus on the baby instead of your myopic agenda.

This is another example of how weak NM Laws are when it comes to defenseless infants/children being beaten to the point that they have to be airlifted to a regional trauma center. If there is ever a reason to have the death penalty law reinstated in NM, this is it. I am tired of hearing, reading, and watching news reports in which infants/children are murdered and then these animals are given light sentences. Either sentence them to life without parole or execute them.

I hope you get butt-raped often Cardenas. You lousy POS

Looks like a "tough guy" in the mug shot. Must be pretty tough to throw a milk bottle at a toddler. Hey Jaime, rumor has it that child abusers don't fair well in prison. Wait until you see what your cellmates throw at you. You will be going away for a LONG time. Adios scum.

I bet the N.M goverment will let them go then she will get probation and the idiot looser maybe 6 months in jail released with more time added to his probation. The child with a family member that will problaly will do same thing to the child (abuse). I am assuming this because no one in the family reported the abuse, obviously! Someone had to know. Pets are been saved from abused homes our children should too!!! This kind of people if they are.... should get an ass whooping in jail!!!

Why is it...you need a license for everything: having a dog, breeding horses, driving a car, adding on to your house, running any business, serving alcohol, etc. But the most important job in the world...having and raising a child...is open to anyone.

Childhood is not supposed to hurt! I know of several foster parents to take in abused children, nurse them back to health, only to have the courts hand those babies back to abusive parents because they've ''taken classes." Yeah, right.

There is no justice for children in this country. An abortion loving society has a trickle down effect to the most defenseless. For some reason children are not appreciated and truly cherished. Most people prefer their selfish lifestyles and properly parenting is no longer a priority. Where is the child's biological father in this gruesome picture???

Absolutely correct. I fear society has lost all morals and ethics.
