EL PASO— Two women were killed early Thursday morning after the car they were passengers in was hit by a drunk driver.
The El Paso Police Department's Special Traffic investigators were called to the deadly crash on Lee Blvd and Turner Road. Police said 20-year-old Gabriela Delgado was driving a red 2007 Chevrolet Aveo at 2:14 a.m. with Armando Sierra, 21, Cynthia Carillo, 20, Evalynn Rose, 21, and Jeannette Lazaro, 21, as her passengers. Delgado was traveling east when she stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Lee and Turner. At the same time, 21-year-old Arturo Vasquez was driving a 2009 red Dodge Charger with 19-year-old Kenia Guevara as his passenger and did not yield at the stop sign, hitting the left side of the Aveo. Rose and Lazaro died at the scene.
Delgado, Carillo, and Vasquez were taken to Del Sol Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. Police said none of the passengers in the Aveo were wearing seat belts.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash by both drivers.
Vasquez was arrested and charged with DWI 2 offense and booked into the El Paso County jail. These are the 7 and 8 traffic fatalities of the year compared to 3 during this time in 2010.
Charges are pending against Delgado.
