Two El Paso teachers were named ESC Region 19 Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year Wednesday and will advance to compete for the Texas Teacher of the Year Award.

Amanda Brooke Bowser, a literacy coach at Colin Powell Elementary in the El Paso Independent School District, and Carlos Briano, a journalism teacher at El Dorado High School in the Socorro Independent School District, won the award.

Fellow teacher of the year nominee Gladys Guzman explained what makes teaching a rewarding job.

"Teaching is how to save the world, so I believe that I am making the world a better place by teaching every student and teaching them well, teaching them with passion and with power, so they can become productive members of society," said Guzman, who is a third grade teacher at Red Sands Elementary in the Clint ISD.

In all, 22 teachers, including Bowser, Briano and Guzman were honored at the ceremony.

The Texas Teacher of the Year award winner will be announced in October.
