NewsChannel 9 is learning more about two El Paso businessmen arrested for bribery in South Texas. As we reported Steven Sambrano, owner of SamCorp, and Ramiro Guzman, a consultant for SamCorp, pled guilty yesterday to bribing school board officials in South Texas.
NewsChannel 9 has learned it was SamCorp who first secured a contract with Socorro ISD for a high school that is supposed to be built at Pebble Hills and Joe Battle.
We also found out SamCorp had four contracts with Ysleta ISD, including one to remodel some parts of North Loop Elementary.
Spokespersons for both school districts say after the arrests those contracts were rebid and the guilty pleas haven't delayed their projects.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office the men admitted to giving school board members gifts, including:
- Tickets to San Antonio Spurs games.
- Tickets to the Oscar De La Hoya/Shane Mosley fight
- Tickets and hotel rooms for the NCAA basketball tournament when in San Antonio.
Samcorp used to be run out of an El Paso office when Sambrano took it over in 1993. The company was responsible for a number of large construction projects around El Paso including the renovation and expansion of the convention center.
