SUNLAND PARK, NM - The borderland takes "the season of giving" seriously.

Low-income families in Sunland Park gathered at a firehouse today to get free turkeys, lightbulbs, and jackets for kids. The pro-tem mayor of Sunland Park said the event was made possible through donations and local organizations.

"We try to do this event every year. It's to help out children who don't have a jacket, or families that don't have a turkey for Thanksgiving,” said Mayor Pro-tem Daniel Salinas.

Sunland Park isn't the only city helping out the needy. Similar giveaways have taken place throughout El Paso and Anthony in the last few weeks.
