EL PASO - The aggravated assault trial of a former Deputy Constable will continue on Monday. This week jurors heard from witnesses, including one man who said the victim was not a threat to the constable when he was shot.
Ramos tried pulling over Juan Ortegon on August 16, 2008, but Ortegon led Ramos on what witnesses describe as a high speed chase. According to the indictment, Ortegon eventually stopped, but then he reversed into the patrol car before taking off on foot. The indictment says a struggle between Ramos and Ortegon ensued, and witnesses say Ortegon began running. That's when witnesses say Ramos shot Ortegon.
One of those witnesses, Shan Cogong, was driving with his family in the area when the shooting happened. In court, Cogong was asked if he saw Ortegon do anything that posed a threat to the constable. Cogong said, "...when he exited the vehicle, no."
Cogong was also asked if Ortegon had any kind of weapon when he was shot by the constable. He responded, "No."
The trial will continue on Monday.
