Arrest affidavit: Mother admitted to drinking before fatal rollover that killed toddler
Mother charged with intoxication manslaughter
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — El Paso Police tell us that 2-year-old Jazline Saldana has passed away as a result of injuries sustained following a rollover on Saturday evening. EPPD has arrested the toddler's mother, 32-year-old Bernice Alonso in connection with the toddler's death.
The crash happened about 7:33 p.m. Saturday night along the 9700 block of Socorro Rd.
The arrest affidavit obtained Wednesday morning alleges that Alonso had been speeding along Socorro Rd. and was passing cars along the unimproved shoulder when she attempted to get back onto Socorro Rd. and lost control of the car, causing it to roll over several times.
Alonso's passenger, 2-year-old Jazline Saldana was ejected from the car and sustained serious head trauma and substaintial injuries to the liver. The responding officer reported that Jazlin was unresponsive and bleeding from her mouth and ears when he arrived. Saldana was taken to University Medical Center for treatment of her injuries where she died Monday evening.
An El Paso Police Officer witnesed the collision and immediately stopped to render aid, according to the arrest affidafit. The officer noticed that Alonso appeared to be intoxicated. Alonso allegedly admitted to responding officers that she had two "Cheladas" before getting behind the wheel.
An officer administered a field sobriety test to Alonso, which she allegedly failed.
Police did not say whether the 2-year-old was properly restrained in a child safety seat at the time of the crash.
Alonso has been charged with Intoxication Manslaughter, she has been booked on a $100,000 bond.
