Too many antibiotics might be bad for your health
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than two million people get antibiotic-resistant infections every year.
At least 23,000 people die because drugs aren't enough to fight off their infections.
We asked a local doctor if there's something people can do to prevent this from happening to them.
According to Rhonda Fleming, an Infection and Disease Specialist, fifty percent of patients are taking antibiotics that they should not be using.
She says if a person does not need to be on antibiotics, they should not take them.
An additional problem that doctors in the Borderland face is that many people cross the border to buy antibiotics.
Fleming says doctors in El Paso have been working with pharmacists in Mexico to try and crack down on this.
